President's Message
Your gift to The American University of Greece (AUG) can make a difference in the life of this institution that has been making a difference in the lives of students and society since 1875.
On March 7, 2009, I was inaugurated as president of The American College of Greece (ACG). I began my speech on that occasion with these words: “They had an idea – the founders of this college: to make a difference in the lives of girls in a distant land. Their vision was large; their resources meager; but the idea took hold. Originally planted in Smyrna in 1875, relocated amidst great suffering in 1923 to Greece, the idea grew. Tonight, we meet as the inheritors of this 134-year-old idea to dedicate ourselves to its furtherance in our time.”
Now in my 17th year as president of both AUG and ACG, it has been my distinct privilege to play a part in the remarkable growth and development of this institution despite the unforeseen challenges of a nearly decade-long Greek financial crisis and a global pandemic. Our total enrollment has grown from just over 4,000 students to nearly 8,000 students from 70+ countries. Our economic, cultural and social impact in Greece has been magnified. And, through the generous support of our alumni and friends as well as our foundation, corporate and government partners, our annual fundraising has increased six-fold, and we exceeded our 2025 goal of a $250M endowment.
In 2021, we incorporated AUG in Boston, Massachusetts with an historic mission and expansive vision:
To add distinctive and sustainable value to our students, Greece, American education, Hellenic heritage, and the global community through transformative teaching, scholarship and service
To develop the AUG Global Campus and the ACG Athens Campus as a unique comprehensive, U.S.-based, U.S.-accredited, international, education system serving students across the education spectrum, Pre-K through graduate, and across the world.
The AUG Global Campus will offer students a range of online undergraduate and graduate degree programs that combine high quality instruction, state-of-the-art curricula, flexible delivery formats, and affordable tuition. It will also serve as a base for academic program and study abroad partnerships with select U.S. colleges and universities (the ACG Athens Campus hosts over 1,000 U.S. students from over 200 U.S. colleges and universities annually) and as the U.S. accredited (New England Commission of Higher Education – NECHE) and Massachusetts authorized (Massachusetts Board of Higher Education – MBHE) degree awarding institution for undergraduate and graduate studies completed at the ACG Athens Campus.
We invite you to consider supporting the mission, vision and growing impact of AUG and ACG.
