Deree – The American College of Greece hosted 67 Greek-American and Canadian undergraduate students from the Heritage Greece Program for a two-week journey to Greece for students to connect with their roots. The program took place in two sessions over the months of June & July.
For 15 fun-filled days, the students had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience first-hand their Hellenic heritage, traditions and culture in the company of their Greek peers. Students visited the Greek Parliament and Athens City Hall where they met the mayor, Mr. Kostas Bakoyiannis; walked through the Ancient Agora of Athens; picked fresh fruit and vegetables at the local laiki (farmer’s market); visited the Acropolis Museum and National Gallery in Athens; attended a lovely concert at Herodion by the world-class Greek violinist, Leonidas Kavakos. They also had a chance to visit the Parthenon, Meteora, and Greek islands, among many other trips.
Heritage Greece is an unforgettable journey designed to help students connect with their Greek roots through a culturally immersive experience. It was developed by the National Hellenic Society (NHS) as part of its mission to celebrate and preserve Greek heritage in the United States. Students learn language skills within the context of modern Greece and travel to important archaeological locations, which, coupled with island trips and many other fun activities, helps them finally form a true bond with their ancestors, roots, and heritage.
Over the past 12 years, Deree has collaborated with the NHS to give Greek-American and Canadian students the opportunity to visit their motherland. A big THANK YOU to all ACG faculty, students and staff who helped with the program.
