A core mission of ACG is to contribute to the advancement of Greece and the global community through teaching, scholarship, outreach and service rooted in the American educational tradition. The achievement of this mission is not possible without the support of alumni and friends of the College.
DONATEThe American College of Greece (ACG) is the oldest and largest US accredited college or university in Europe for over 148 years, ACG has been offering transformative education and cultivating a fertile intellectual and cultural collaboration between Greece and the United States.
ACG is an independent, not for profit, nonsectarian, co-educational academic institution.
Missionary Maria West is appointed by the American Board of Commissioners of the Congregational Church to open an educational institution in Smyrna, Asia Minor
Re-established as the American College for Girls at the invitation of Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos at Paleo Faliro (Athens, Greece) following the Asia Minor catastrophe
The school moves to the Helleniko campus
School buildings serve as military hospitals
The School of Social Welfare, the first of its kind in Greece, is created to help meet the urgent needs of UNRRA (UN Relief and Rehabilitation Administration) for trained personnel and to provide a social welfare specialization for College students
Hill House, the Boarding Department at Pierce College, is reorganized after WWII and expanded to accommodate and house 100 students
Renowned painter and engraver, Moschos George, joins Pierce College as the professor of drawing and organizes annual painting exhibitions in the Pierce Hall, with some of the most famous Greek artists: Kanellis, Mitarakis, Gounaropoulos, Vourloumis, Katraki
Gymnasium and College divisions are incorporated in the State of Colorado, US, under an independent Board of Trustees
The school is recognized by the Greek state as equivalent to the Greek public schools
First studies commence on the new campus at Aghia Paraskevi
First bachelor's degrees awarded: Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration
Pierce and Deree College officially become divisions of The American College of Greece
Deree College is accredited by NEASC (currently known as the New England Commission of Higher Education – NECHE), a globally recognized standard of excellence US accrediting agency. Deree is the 1st international American college or university to receive this accreditation.
Pierce College becomes co-educational
The College is honored by the Academy of Athens for its contribution to education
Inauguration of Kimon Friar Visiting Lectureship in Modern Greek Arts and Letters at Deree
Inauguration of the Downtown Campus
Deree Graduate School established
The main campus serves as the high-performance training center of the US Olympic Committee during the 2004 Athens Olympics
Deree enters a degree validation agreement with the Open University of the United Kingdom; Established the Frances Rich School of Fine and Performing Arts
Alba Graduate Business School and ACG officially announce a strategic alliance. Alba relocates to ACG downtown Athens campus
Institute of Public Health established, funded by Behrakis Foundation
Pierce IB Diploma Program (IBDP) established to provide an international education that goes beyond national, cultural and geographical boundaries
Launched ACG 150, a strategic plan to leverage education for economic, cultural and social impact
Opening of the ACG Simulated Trading Room with the support of USAID (United States Agency for International Development); “Education Unites: From Camp to Campus,” an academic scholarship program to empower young refugees in Greece and offer displaced students the opportunity to continue their studies at Deree
Deree Library renovation project completed with support from USAID
Opening of Deree Stem Labs and renovated Pierce Physics Labs, supported by USAID
Pierce Pre-K, Kindergarten and Elementary School launched at the new East Campus at Spata
In 2022, the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education approved unanimously the establishment of The American University of Greece in Massachusetts. AUG will open up for students electives, double majoring, and minoring opportunities that are reflective of the American system.
