Historical Highlights

The American College of Greece (ACG) is the oldest and largest US accredited college or university in Europe for over 148 years, ACG has been offering transformative education and cultivating a fertile intellectual and cultural collaboration between Greece and the United States.

ACG is an independent, not for profit, nonsectarian, co-educational academic institution.

Missionary Maria West is appointed by the American Board of Commissioners of the Congregational Church to open an educational institution in Smyrna, Asia Minor

Re-established as the American College for Girls at the invitation of Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos at Paleo Faliro (Athens, Greece) following the Asia Minor catastrophe

School buildings serve as military hospitals

The School of Social Welfare, the first of its kind in Greece, is created to help meet the urgent needs of UNRRA (UN Relief and Rehabilitation Administration) for trained personnel and to provide a social welfare specialization for College students

Hill House, the Boarding Department at Pierce College, is reorganized after WWII and expanded to accommodate and house 100 students

Renowned painter and engraver, Moschos George, joins Pierce College as the professor of drawing and organizes annual painting exhibitions in the Pierce Hall, with some of the most famous Greek artists: Kanellis, Mitarakis, Gounaropoulos, Vourloumis, Katraki

Gymnasium and College divisions are incorporated in the State of Colorado, US, under an independent Board of Trustees

Deree College is accredited by NEASC (currently known as the New England Commission of Higher Education – NECHE), a globally recognized standard of excellence US accrediting agency. Deree is the 1st international American college or university to receive this accreditation.

In 2022, the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education approved unanimously the establishment of The American University of Greece in Massachusetts. AUG will open up for students electives, double majoring, and minoring opportunities that are reflective of the American system.
