Scope of Research

School of Business and Economics Faculty and Instructors' research interests lie in applied business and economics areas, notably in financial economics, investment portfolio analysis, shipping and logistics, tourism and food, human resources management and entrepreneurship management. They regularly publish articles in leading international business and economics journals, such as Oxford Economic Papers; European Financial Management; Energy Economics; European Journal of Finance; Journal of Common Market Studies; Transportation Research Part A and Part E; Annals of Tourism Research; Food Quality and Preference and Foods. School of Business and Economics Faculty and Instructors have strong links with the local and the international academic community in their specific fields, co-authoring research papers and grant proposals, as well as serving as journal associate editors. They regularly present their research in national and international conferences organized by academic institutions, associations and societies.

Accounting, Economics and Finance

The Accounting, Economics and Finance department faculty are deeply committed to teaching and scholarship aiming at bridging research engagement with classroom instruction. The department fosters interaction between faculty and students and provides opportunities for collaborative research. All faculty are scholarly active in a broad range of fields. Research topics cover microeconomics, macroeconomics, shipping, financial markets, defense economics, international finance, sustainable economics and finance, labor economics, public finance, total quality management and earnings management. A wide range of methods is employed, both theoretical and empirical. The aim is to publish the outcome of the research activity in leading economic and finance journals. 

International Business, Tourism and Hospitality (IBTH)

Faculty in the IBTH Department pursue a dynamic and interdisciplinary research agenda that spans global business, tourism, and service industries. Their work in international business explores innovation, technology, sustainability, artificial intelligence, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, alongside research in entrepreneurship and shipping. In tourism and hospitality, faculty examine areas such as tourism marketing, consumer behavior, wine and dark tourism, sports tourism, and the intersections between tourism, agriculture, and technology. Additional research focuses on services marketing, co-creation, and service ecosystems, as well as human resource management, leadership, and people analytics within global and service-oriented contexts. Collectively, this work reflects a strong emphasis on innovation, industry relevance, and the evolving dynamics of international business and tourism sectors.

Faculty in the Department of Management engage in a broad and interdisciplinary research agenda that reflects the evolving nature of organizations, technology, and global business. Their work spans entrepreneurship and innovation—including startups and the shipping sector—alongside human resource management, leadership, talent management, and people analytics. Research also explores organizational transformation, the impact of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, and the role of sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals in business. A strong emphasis is placed on data-driven decision-making, with active research in business analytics, advanced data analytics, business intelligence, fintech, and information systems. In addition, faculty investigate technology-enhanced learning, online and blended education, knowledge management, and quality assurance in higher education. This diverse body of work highlights a commitment to innovation, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and the practical application of research in management and digital transformation.

Marketing

Technological advances and the expansion of social media have rendered marketing a rapidly changing business function. Qualitative and Quantitative Research carried out by marketing faculty focuses on the subject areas of Advertising, Marketing Communications, Branding, Corporate Branding, Celebrity Branding, Luxury Marketing, Digital Marketing, Healthcare Marketing, Food Marketing, Sports Marketing, Consumer Behavior, Consumer Resistance Behavior, Diffusion of Technological Innovations, Bank Marketing, Services Marketing, and Customer Service to Internships and Employability, Education for Disabled and Vulnerable, Education and Student Engagement, Sports Tourism, and Usability Testing. Collaborations between academics, as well as between academics and practitioners are welcome both in the case of research and grant proposals.

Maritime Transport and Supply Chain (MTS)

Faculty in the MTS department are active researchers in their fields of expertise and regularly publish their research in peer-reviewed journals. They also participate in international conferences and research projects. MTS faculty research focuses on Freight Market Modelling, Strategic Management in Shipping, Maritime Economics, Maritime Clusters, Sustainability in Shipping, Shipping Finance, Smart Mobility and Logistics.
